If you don’t know Cakwe, then be prepared to expand your cullinary vocabulary. Cakwe, also known as Chinese donut, is basically fried dough. It has longer shape, similar to Spanish Churros, but is turbocharged size-wise.

Nothing beats freshly fried Cakwe. We, Indonesians, like to have this chewy yet crispy dough with our congees. Older generations would have it as morning or afternon snack to go along their tea or coffee.

You normally would associate donuts with dessert. However, this addictive little delight is the polar opposite. It can be served as an entree, comparable to the humble prawn toast. We made it for dinner parties on multiple occassions and got raving reviews from all of our guests.

Although it may sound complex, you actually only need three components: Chinese donut, prawn mixture and a dipping sauce. You can find Chinese donut in most Asian groceries (normally in freezer setions). Make the prawn mixture, and smear it onto the donut and then deep fry.

We understand that not everyone is sold when having to deep fry food. However, if you own an air fryer, you’re in luck. This recipe in fact works really well with it, plus you reap the added benefit of consuming less oil.

Cakwe Udang Mayonnaise (Prawn Stuffed Chinese Donut)

  • Deep Fryer
  • Air Fryer (optional)

Ingredients
  

Cakwe

  • 5 pair Chinese Donut

Prawn Mixture

  • 250 g Peeled Prawn
  • 3 tbsp Tapioca Flour or Corn Flour as substitute
  • 15 g Shallot minced
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 Spring Onion chopped
  • 1 tbsp Oyster Sauce
  • 1/4 tsp White Pepper
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1 pinch Sugar

Dipping Sauce

  • 1 tbsp Sweet Chilli Sauce
  • 3 tbsp Mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp Chilli Sauce optional

Garnish

  • Sesame Seed
  • Red Chilli thinly sliced
  • Spring Onion chopped

Instructions
 

Prawn Paste

  • Roughly chop prawn into smaller pieces.
  • Combine prawn mixture and mix well.

Cakwe

  • Cut Chinese Donut into 5cm length
  • Stuff 1 tablespoon of prawn mixture into Chinese Donut.
  • Heat up oil and deep fry until golden brown.
  • Sprinkle with sesame seeds

Air Fryer

  • Preheat air fryer to 190C
  • Spray chinese donut and prawn mixture with oil
  • Cook in air fryer for 5 minutes, flipping halfway
  • Sprinkle with sesame seeds

Dipping Sauce

  • Combine all ingredients and serve together
